The 37-year-old British tennis star leaves behind a legacy marked by historic achievements, having competed in an era dominated by some of the greatest players in the sport’s history.

“I gave as much as I could to the career,” Murray said after his and Evans’ exit from the tournament, where they were defeated by Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.

“There are obviously things that I look back on and wish that I could have done differently, but it’s been a tough time to win major titles in the sport with the players that were ahead of me. I’m proud of my achievements, my efforts, and I’m looking forward to prolonged rest now.”

Murray’s illustrious career includes three Grand Slam singles titles, two Olympic gold medals, and one Davis Cup victory. He also achieved the world number one ranking, a testament to his skill and perseverance.

Reflecting on his career, Murray expressed pride in his accomplishments. “I worked really, really hard to achieve the results I did at a really difficult time to win major titles. I’m proud. I gave it a good go. How my body has finished up shows I’ve put it through a lot. So I’m looking forward to a rest now,” he said.

Murray also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his feelings: “Never even liked tennis anyway.”

Tributes have poured in from various figures, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who praised Murray’s two decades of entertainment and sportsmanship, calling him a “true British great.”

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney hailed Murray as “Scotland’s greatest ever sportsman,” and LTA chief executive Scott Lloyd lauded him as “the greatest tennis player ever to come from this country and a giant of British sport.”

Murray’s retirement marks the end of an era in tennis, with his contributions to the game leaving a lasting impact on the sport and its fans.
