Akwa Ibom Monarch Freed after N50m Ransom Payment

The Paramount Ruler of Mbo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, HRM Ogwong Okon Asukwo Abang, has been freed by his captors after his family paid a ransom of N50 million.

The incident occurred when armed individuals stormed his palace in Ebughu around 9pm on May 18, 2024. During the attack, his wife was shot in the leg before the abductors took him away.

The State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Timfon John, confirmed the monarch’s release on Monday, May 27, but did not disclose if any money exchanged hands.

However, a community leader, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that the ransom was paid for his freedom.

Expressing dismay over the situation, the source highlighted that some local youths were involved in the kidnapping, driven by greed and envy towards the monarch’s position.

The community has vowed to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.

Following his release, the monarch has been hospitalized for medical treatment, while his wife, who sustained injuries during the abduction, is recovering and expected to be discharged soon.

The incident has sparked outrage within the community, emphasizing the need for swift justice and security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
