This decision, he explained, honors Asantehene Nana Agyeman Prempeh I for his influential role in shaping the destiny of the Ashanti people.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized Nana Agyeman Prempeh I’s contributions to modernizing and centralizing Ashanti governance.
He highlighted how the 14th Asantehene’s leadership bolstered the kingdom’s ability to navigate both internal challenges and external threats.
During a period of turmoil in Ashanti history, Nana Agyeman Prempeh I’s leadership reinforced the resilience of the kingdom.

President Akufo-Addo also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Nana Agyeman Prempeh I and Yaa Asantewaa in resisting colonial annexation.
The renaming ceremony marks a tribute to Nana Agyeman Prempeh I’s legacy as a symbol of Ashanti pride, independence, and sovereignty.
The President announced that the airport would commence full operations later this year, following necessary commissioning procedures.
The facility, managed by the Ghana Airport Company Limited, is undergoing testing to ensure seamless operations for both domestic and international flights.
With a capacity to serve over eight hundred thousand passengers annually, the airport is poised to meet the growing demand for air travel, particularly from the northern and middle belt regions.
