Cheng Lei: China releases Australian journalist three years after arrest

On Wednesday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shared the long-awaited news with the public.

Cheng was met at Melbourne Airport by Foreign Minister Penny Wong. Her return to her homeland has brought immense relief to her family, who endured a prolonged period of uncertainty.

Albanese emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Her return brings an end to a very difficult few years for her family.” He added, “The government has been seeking this for a long period of time, and her return will be warmly welcomed not just by her family and friends, but by all Australians.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin confirmed Cheng’s deportation on Wednesday, explaining that she had been released after serving her sentence.
