Former NHL coach and iconic ESPN hockey analyst, Barry Melrose, announced on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and will be retiring from his esteemed career.

Melrose, who has dedicated over 50 years to the world of hockey, is recognized not only for his exceptional coaching and playing abilities but also for his Emmy Award-winning contributions to ESPN.
In a heartfelt statement, the 67-year-old Melrose expressed his gratitude for the years he has devoted to the sport, saying, “I’ve had over 50 extraordinary years playing, coaching, and analyzing the world’s greatest game, hockey.
“It’s now time to hang up my skates and focus on my health, my family, including my supportive wife Cindy, and whatever comes next.”

He continued, “I’m beyond grateful for my hockey career, and to have called ESPN home for almost 30 years. Thanks for the incredible memories, and I’ll now be cheering for you from the stands.”
Melrose’s journey through the world of hockey is nothing short of remarkable. Before joining ESPN in 1996, he achieved significant success as a coach, notably leading the Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup Final in the first of his three seasons.
His coaching career also included a brief return to the bench with the Tampa Bay Lightning for 16 games. In total, Melrose boasts an 84-108-29 record as a head coach.
For nearly three decades, Barry Melrose has been a familiar and respected presence on ESPN’s hockey coverage, providing viewers with insightful analysis and a deep understanding of the game.
