Cuban-born Yuli Gurriel plays first base for the Miami Marlins in Major League Baseball (MLB). Before joining Sancti Spiritus, he played for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB), and the Cuban National Series’ (CNS) Sancti Spiritus. Gurriel won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and was a previous member of Cuba’s national squad.

He is a skilled infielder who has experience at shortstop, second base, and third base.
Gurriel led the league in hits and runs scored during the 2004–2005 Cuban National Series (CNS). He led the series in triples, runs, and runs batted in (RBI) in the 2005–06 season, though.
