Maude Jacques: Women’s wheelchair basketball world champion, dead at 31

During the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto, Canada, Maude Jacques (April 21, 1992–October 8, 2023) won the gold medal. She was a 2.5 point Paralympic wheelchair basketball player for Canada.

On April 21, 1992, Maude Jacques was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Her physiotherapist introduced her to wheelchair basketball in 2001. She started off playing for a local mini-team before moving on to club teams. At the 2011 Canada Games, she represented Quebec, and her squad took home the gold medal.

She was first chosen for the U25 national squad that year, and later for the senior women’s team. At the 2011 U25 World Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario, where Team Canada finished fourth, she competed with the U25 team.

World champion in women’s wheelchair basketball Maude Jacques passed away at age 31. On Sunday, Wheelchair Basketball Canada revealed that former national team player Maude Jacques had passed away unexpectedly at the age of 31. After hearing the news, the Canadian Paralympic Committee also issued a statement. The reason wasn’t stated.
