Bret Gilliam was a pioneering technical diver who lived in America from February 3, 1951, until October 8, 2023. Along with Mitch Skaggs, he co-founded the certifying organization Technical Diving International. He was also formerly the only person to hold the world record for deep diving on air.

He is also a well-known author who writes about diving. Gilliam has written or collaborated on 72 books, more than 1500 feature magazine pieces, and more than 100 magazine covers. Since 1959, he has recorded almost 19,000 dives in his career as a diver.
