Famous American author and scuba diver Bret Gilliam was born on February 3, 1951, and he died on October 8, 2023. In 1971, Gilliam founded the consulting firm Ocean Tech, which offered expert witness testimony in instances involving scuba diving and maritime matters.

He has appeared in over 400 court cases since 1973, almost exactly equally split between plaintiff and defense litigation. (In a case where he testified for the plaintiffs as the maritime and diving expert witness, a $12 million settlement was reached in May 2015).

At the age of 72, Bret Gilliam passed away on October 8, 2023, as a result of complications following a stroke. In 1996, Gilliam assumed the position of president and CEO of UWATEC USA.
