However, this world record was revoked in 2019 due to a ruling that he had violated doping laws. On September 15, 2019, Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor set a new world record for the half marathon, clocking in at 58:01.

With a time of 2:11:36, Kiptum made his marathon debut at the Rabat Marathon in 2015. He finished third. On December 7, 2018, he finished in second place, 2 minutes and 16 seconds after Marius Kipserem, who won the first Abu Dhabi Marathon.
