Former American football defensive tackle Nicholas Fairley was born on January 23, 1988. He participated in collegiate football for Auburn University, where he was named an All-American and a part of a squad that won the BCS National Championship. In the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Fairley was selected by the Detroit Lions. Additionally, he has played for the New Orleans Saints and the St. Louis Rams.

Fairley made the decision to skip his final year of eligibility and join the 2011 NFL Draft just four days after the BCS National Championship Game. At first, it was anticipated that he would be selected first overall. He was expected to go somewhere between 8 and 12 after the NFL Combine. The Detroit Lions selected Fairley with the number thirteen overall pick in the first round.
