Cunningham founded Youth With a Mission (YWAM) in 1960, a movement providing missionary opportunities for Christian youth post-high school, regardless of denomination.

Together with his wife Darlene, Cunningham founded YWAM in Lausanne, Switzerland, at just 24 years old. They became enduring figures in YWAM leadership, with titles as Founders of the Mission and advisers to YWAM International’s leadership.

In 1978, Cunningham co-founded the University of the Nations in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, alongside Howard Malmstadt.

Cunningham’s visionary leadership transformed countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on global missions.

On October 6, 2023, Cunningham passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of faith, dedication, and service that continues to shine brightly.
