An American singer, songwriter, and record producer by the name of Raphael Saadiq. On May 14, 1966, in Oakland, California, the United States, Charles Ray Wiggins was born.

Saadiq started his professional career as the lead vocalist and bassist in the rhythm and blues and dance combo Tony after returning to Oakland following a tour with Prince. Toni, Toné, Tony, he went by the name Raphael Wiggins. Along with his brother Dwayne Wiggins, cousin Timothy Christian, and Toni! Toné, they shouted.
He changed his last name to Saadiq in the middle of the 1990s; the Arabic phrase for “man of his word” means “man of his word.” Saadiq and Mary J. Blige worked together as songwriters in 2017 for the film Mudbound, for which they each received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
