In Sant’ Angelo Lodigiano, Lombardy, Italy, on July 15, 1850, Maria Francesca Cabrini, the future St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, was born. She was the youngest of thirteen children and was born two months early. Frances would spend the majority of her life in a fragile and sensitive state of health because sadly, only three of her siblings survived through puberty.

Frances was educated in a convent at a school run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart and committed to live a life for religious activity from an early age. She received a teaching certificate and graduated with good honors.

Frances applied to join the Daughters of the Sacred Heart Catholic order when she was 18 but was rejected due to her poor health.

What was Frances Xavier Cabrini known for?

For the Italian immigrants, Cabrini conducted catechism and education classes and met the needs of the numerous orphans. Despite great odds, she started schools and orphanages. Soon, Frances Cabrini received offers from all over the world asking her to open schools.

Frances constructed 67 hospitals, convents, orphanages, and schools. She worked, prayed, worked, and prayed. And God brought about favorable results as a result of her work and prayer. She obtained citizenship in the country in 1909, and in 1946, she became the first American to be canonized.
