He wrote the Dad Again column for Slate. Lewis worked for Conde Nast Portfolio, but in February 2009 left to join Vanity Fair.

In 2023, Lewis wrote Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon, which is about Sam Bankman-Fried and the collapse of FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange he was the CEO of.
