Baseball and American football coach Hampton Smith lived from October 1, 1934, until October 2, 2023. He held the position of head football coach at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, for two separate periods of time, from 1971 to 1976 and then again from 1982 to 1999, with a combined record of 157-90-4.

From 1981 to 1983, Smith served as Albany State’s baseball program’s head coach and compiled a 46-37-1 record. Smith coached high school football in McComb and Prentiss, Mississippi, before being hired at Albany State in 1981.

After graduating from Mississippi Vocational College, which is now known as Mississippi Valley State University, he went on to Tennessee State University to get his master’s degree.
On October 2, 2023, a day after turning 89, Smith passed away.
