Born in 1962, Richie Poulton dedicated his life to advancing our understanding of human development and made significant contributions to the field of life course sciences. Professor Poulton was widely recognized as the director of the University of Otago’s Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health & Development Research Unit, which administered the groundbreaking Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study. This longitudinal study has spanned decades and fundamentally shaped our understanding of human development.
On September 29, 2023, Richie Poulton’s untimely passing left a void in the field of psychology and scientific research. His work had a profound impact not only on academia but also on public policy, emphasizing the importance of rigorous social science principles.
In a heartfelt tribute, former New Zealand chief science advisor Professor Sir Peter Gluckman expressed the loss felt by both the scientific community and New Zealand as a whole. Speaking in his final interview with TVNZ’s Sunday program, Richie Poulton expressed his immense pride in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Study and gratitude to those who had participated in it. Jules Radich, Mayor of Dunedin, also shared an emotional message, confirming Poulton’s passing. Richie Poulton’s battle with salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), a rare and aggressive form of cancer originating from the salivary glands, became public knowledge in early 2021. Despite treatment, the disease ultimately proved to be terminal. Richie Poulton passed away on October 1, 2023, at the age of 61.
His legacy, however, lives on through the groundbreaking research he championed. While we mourn the loss of this extraordinary scientist and advocate, we remember the profound impact he had on our understanding of human development and the enduring influence of his work. Plans for his funeral have yet to be finalized, but his contributions to science and society will be celebrated for generations to come.
