Butch Harmon grew up playing golf. His three brothers also became professional golfers. He was a great football player as well as a great golfer.
He graduated from the University of Houston and served in the United States Army for three years in Vietnam.
Butch Harmon played on the PGA Tour for one year before moving on to a successful career as a golf coach. Throughout the 1970s, he was King Hassan II of Morocco’s personal golf coach.

He rose to international prominence as Tiger Woods’ instructor from 1993 until 2004. In addition to Phil Mickelson, he has coached Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Natalie Gulbis, and Gary Woodland.
Since 2003, Golf Digest Magazine has named him the top golf instructor in the United States. Harmon has written golf instructional books under the titles Four Cornerstones of Winning Golf and Butch Harmon’s Playing Lessons.
He also collaborated with Greg Norman on his multi-media learning system Greg Norman’s Better Golf, which includes three films, a book, skill guide cards, and an audio cassette, as well as his book Advanced Golf.
