Each state in the US elects two senators who serve six-year terms in Washington, DC, where they pass laws and vote on policies.
Typically, the Senate is referred to as the upper house and has a smaller membership than the lower house. In some federal states senates also exist at the subnational level.
There are a total of 535 Members of Congress. 100 serve in the U.S. Senate and 435 serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

What happens when a senator dies?
A vacancy created in the legislature by the death of a senator must be filled by appointment if one or part of one regular session of the legislature remains.
If there is only an eventuality of a special session then the appointment is to be made upon calling of the special session.
