On May 22, 1930, Harvey Milk was born in Long Island, New York. The first openly homosexual public official in California was a gay rights activist who served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978.

The US Navy declared in July 2016 that it would be renaming a ship in his honor. President Barack Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. From 1951 to 1955, he served in the US Navy for four years. Later, he worked as a researcher for Bache & Company for a while.

During his nearly eleven-month term in office, Milk sponsored a bill that outlawed discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in housing, employment, and public facilities.

Milk was the second son of a Jewish family and was born in the New York town of Woodmere. His father worked in the apparel retail industry. In 1951, Milk earned her degree from Albany Teachers College. He joined the Navy as a deepwater diving officer on a submarine rescue ship in the Pacific during the Korean War. When the Navy learned of Milk’s homosexuality in 1953, he was dishonorably discharged.
