On May 22, 1930, in Long Island, New York, Harvey Milk was born. When he sat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978, the gay rights activist made history by becoming the state’s first openly gay public official.

The US Navy revealed that it would be renaming a ship after him in July 2016. President Barack Obama bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom to him posthumously. Between 1951 and 1955, he spent four years in the US Navy. He later worked as a researcher at Bache & Company for a period of time.

During his nearly eleven-month term in office, Milk sponsored a bill outlawing sexual orientation-based discrimination in housing, employment, and other public accommodations.
