As the first openly gay politician in the United States, Harvey Bernard Milk was a leader in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) civil rights movement. He was essentially a native of New York and relocated to San Francisco at a time when many gay men were doing so.

He started taking an active role in local politics since the climate in San Francisco was more supportive of the homosexual rights movement.His sexual orientation was kept a secret during his formative years, but he eventually came out of the closet when he realized that as an openly homosexual politician, he would be able to do more for the LGBT community.He tried unsuccessfully for three different political positions before being chosen as a city supervisor.

He came to terms with being gay during his adolescence. He had relationships with a variety of individuals, including Scott Smith, Joe Campbell, and Craig Rodwell.
His fellow Supervisor and fellow colleague Dan White was one of his political foes. Milk’s views and actions infuriated him, and on November 27, 1978, he shot Milk to death.
