On December 28, 1934, Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, better known by her stage name Maggie Smith, was born in Ilford, Essex, England. Smith is the daughter of secretary Margaret Hutton and pathologist Nathaniel Smith. Smith’s family relocated to Oxford when she was four because of her father’s employment. Smith graduated from high school at the age of 16 while attending Oxford High School. She later enrolled in Oxford Playhouse’s acting program and earned her degree there in 1953.

1952 saw Smith land her first acting role in the production of “Twelfth Night.” In 1956, the actress made her film debut in “Child in the House.” Smith took part in several popular plays in her early playing career and won numerous awards.
