While he played for six MLB teams, his longest tenure was with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Valenzuela batted and threw left-handed. His career highlights include a win-loss record of 173–153 and an earned run average (ERA) of 3.54. His 41.5 career wins above replacement is the highest of any Mexican-born MLB player.

He signed with the Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1977 and made his MLB debut in 1980, quickly-rising to become a star. In 1981, he won the National League Rookie of the Year Award and the Cy Young Award. He also helped the Dodgers win the World Series that year.

Valenzuela was known for his unorthodox pitching style. He had a slow delivery and a unique windup. He also had a very effective screwball. Valenzuela was a popular player, and he helped to make baseball popular in Mexico and the United States.

He retired from baseball in 1997, and in 2003, he returned to the Dodgers as a broadcaster.

In 2015, he became a naturalized American citizen.
