Burkey Belser, a graphic designer, passed away on September 25 at his home in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the man behind the creation of the ubiquitous nutrition facts label, a stark rectangle listing calories, fat, salt, and other content information that adorns the package of practically every consumable product in grocery shops. He was 76.

His wife Donna Greenfield, with whom he co-founded the design studio Greenfield/Belser in Washington, D.C., claimed that bladder cancer was to blame. When the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act was passed in 1994, Mr. Belser’s nutrition facts label, which was written in bold and light Helvetica type, was introduced. It was hailed as a victory of both graphic design and public health.
