Burkey Belser, a graphic designer most known for creating the nutrition facts label, a bare rectangle that lists calories, fat, sodium, and other nutritional data, passed away on September 25 at his home in Bethesda, Maryland. He was 76.

His wife Donna Greenfield, with whom he co-founded the design studio Greenfield/Belser in Washington, D.C., claimed that bladder cancer was the reason of his death. Following the enactment of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act in 1994, Mr. Belser’s nutrition facts label, which was crafted in bold and light Helvetica type, was hailed as a victory of both graphic design and public health.

The Food and Drug Administration selected Mr. Belser to develop the nutrition label after praising his work on the black and yellow energy recommendation label for appliances.

After graduating from college, Belser worked at two different professions before starting his own design business. Belser joined the provocative journal Avant Garde in New York City after returning from a year at the University of Montpellier in southern France in 1969–1970, eventually rising to the position of circulation director.
