Pavel “Pasha” Kovalev is a professional Russian ballroom and Latin dancer. Kovalev began dancing at the age of eight and came to America with his professional dance partner Anya Garnis in 2001.

He began dancing at the age of eight and competed in Russia in the Amateur Latin division with his partner Anya Garnis till 2000.
Kovalev and Garnis turned professional after migrating to the United States and began competing in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada in 2002.
In September 2011, Kovalev was announced as the next professional dancer for the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing’s ninth series, replacing Jared Murillo, who had departed the show after only one season.

Even though he has made a name for himself in the US and UK, the dancer is originally from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Siberia, Soviet Union.
He is the son of Sergei Kovalev and Galina Kovaleva. Their mother raised Kovalev and his brother. He showed interest in dancing from a young age.
