Murray Stenson, a bartender icon in Seattle and a key figure in the national resurgence of handmade cocktails, has passed away.
The Seattle Times was informed by Stenson’s family on Friday night that he passed away on Friday morning at his Uptown residence. He was 74.

Stenson was one of the most well-known figures in Seattle’s restaurant and bar scenes. Throughout his career, he worked at more than a dozen pubs throughout the city, most notably twice at the Zig Zag Café behind Pike Place Market.

There, he was credited with teaching numerous bartenders how to mix famous cocktails like the martini and introducing clients to a plethora of pre-Prohibition-era drinks like the gin drink The Last Word, which has come to be associated with his name.

The only information provided about Stenson’s sickness by his daughter, Cali Freddolino, was that dad had been experiencing “health complications in recent months.”
In 2010, Stenson’s status as a superstar increased after receiving one of the top accolades in the trade: being named “Best Bartender in America” by his colleagues from across the country at the Tales of the Cocktail event.
