Amato Fakatava, also known by his nick name Mato, was born on December 12, 1994 in the capital of Tonga’s Nuku’alofa. He has two brothers: Talau Fakatava, his twin, and Sosefo Fakatava, his younger brother.

His debut Top League appearance came against Mie Honda Heat on January 12, 2020, after he graduated in 2019 and joined Black Rams Tokyo.

He was invited to the Miyazaki training camp on June 12, 2023, and gained his first selection against Samoa during the summer test matches. He scored a try to start the game. Against Chile, he scored two tries after being chosen for the 2023 World Cup.
