Williams resigned on September 20, 2023. In a statement, he revealed that he resigned from his role as the Bears’ defensive coordinator because he needed to take care of his health and family.
“I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family,” he said in a statement. “I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history.”
Alan Williams’ resignation came on the heels of a crazy day at Halas Hall, with quarterback Justin Fields claiming that the coaching staff is giving him too much information and that he is thinking too much as a result, rather than trusting his instincts.

Despite some rumours and speculation, Alan, along with the Bears’ spokesperson and his lawyer, stressed that his decision was primarily motivated by health issues and personal affairs, wanting to put any uncertainty concerning his resignation to rest.
His lawyer, Chicago-based attorney Andrew M. Stroth told The Associated Press neither Williams nor his family are facing any legal issues.
“They’re not facing them at the moment, and they’re not gonna be facing them,” Stroth said.
