Steve Mafi, a native of Australia and a graduate of Westfields Sports High School in Western Australia, competes for Tonga at the international level after meeting the requirements based on ancestry. He is the grandson of former Tonga captain Sione Mafi Pahulu.

The second row forward, who was born in Australia and played for Australia Schools in 2007, made 60 appearances for Leicester Tigers over the course of a four-year Premiership run.

With the Leicester Tigers in 2011–12, he made a significant breakthrough. The big guy was unexpectedly left off the Tongan 2011 World Cup team despite scoring tries in the LV= Cup and English Premiership finals. After his stint at Leicester, Mafi went back to Australia to sign a contract with the Western Force of Super Rugby.
