Ireland and the world of Irish-language broadcasting mourn the loss of a beloved and pioneering figure as Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí, renowned RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta presenter, has passed away at the age of 53. Born on May 6, 1970, in Cork, Ireland, Mac Aodha Bhuí, known for his popular magazine program “Rónán Beo,” bid farewell to this world on September 19, 2023, at his home in Gaoth Dobhair, Co Donegal, following a valiant battle with colon cancer.

Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí was more than just a radio personality; he was a passionate torch-bearer for Irish-language broadcasting. His remarkable career began in the early 1990s on RnaG, where he embarked on a journey that would make him a prominent voice in the field. Over the years, he hosted his show and garnered numerous awards for his outstanding presentation skills.

Kevin Bakhurst, director general of RTÉ, expressed deep sadness at the news of Mac Aodha Bhuí’s passing, noting, “He was a passionate torch-bearer for Irish-language broadcasting, a radio pioneer whose flair for invention and innovation will influence broadcasters in any language for years to come. His death is a great loss to his family and friends, his colleagues across the organization, and Irish-language broadcasting in general. May he rest in peace.”

Born in Cork, Mac Aodha Bhuí moved to the Gaeltacht community of Gaoth Dobhair when he was just three months old, and it was here that he would spend most of his life. His broadcasting journey began on pirate radio stations in Dublin and Donegal during the 1980s, where he honed his skills and love for radio.

His work extended to Century Radio and RTÉ Irish language programs before he became the presenter of the afternoon show “Cois Life” for three years. His talents also graced the news show “Barrscealta” and the music series “Cúl a Tí” and “Geill Slí.”

In 2005, Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí made history by playing RnaG’s first song with English-language lyrics, “Blister In The Sun” by The Violent Femmes, after it was chosen by listeners.

Aodh Máirtín Ó Fearraigh, RTÉ RnaG regional manager in Donegal, paid tribute to Mac Aodha Bhuí’s outstanding qualities as a broadcaster, saying, “Rónán was a superb broadcaster. He was inquisitive, empathetic, clever, unafraid, and daring. He was unequaled, and he’ll be greatly missed.”

Throughout his tenure, “Rónán Beo” featured a diverse range of content, from interviews to live music, entertainment, health segments, cookery, news stories, and comedy sketches. It also broadcasts live from the Irish-language festival An Oireachtas.

Mac Aodha Bhuí’s remarkable contributions were duly recognized, as he won radio personality of the year at the Oireachtas Festival three times, in 2009, 2010, and 2016, in addition to winning radio show of the year at the event.

As Ireland fondly remembers and celebrates the legacy of Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí, his pioneering spirit, dedication to the Irish language, and unwavering commitment to broadcasting will continue to inspire future generations of radio broadcasters and enthusiasts. He leaves behind a void that will be challenging to fill, but his memory will forever resonate through the airwaves of Irish-language radio. May he rest in eternal peace.
