Ireland mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished broadcasters, Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí, who left an indelible mark on the world of Irish-language broadcasting. Born on May 6, 1970, in Cork, Ireland, Rónán’s enduring legacy as a passionate advocate for the Irish language and culture will be cherished for generations to come. His passing on September 19, 2023, at the age of 53, following a long battle with cancer, leaves a void in the hearts of many.

Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí’s journey in the world of broadcasting was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Irish language. His popular magazine program, “Rónán Beo,” on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, became a beloved fixture for Irish speakers and enthusiasts, offering a platform to celebrate and preserve the richness of the language.

A native of Donegal, Rónán faced a formidable adversary when he was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer four years ago, with metastases that had spread to his liver and lung. Despite this formidable challenge, his determination and resilience shone brightly as he battled this illness with grace and courage.

Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí is survived by his loving wife, Bernie, and their daughter, Fionnuala, who were pillars of support throughout his life’s journey. His relatives, friends, and colleagues also share in the profound sense of loss caused by his passing.

President Michael D Higgins paid tribute to the late broadcaster, acknowledging Rónán’s significant contributions to the Irish-speaking community. President Higgins described Rónán as a “hero amongst the Irish-speaking community” and highlighted his popularity and respect within the Gaeltacht and Irish-speaking communities across Ireland.

Rónán’s influence extended beyond radio, as he showcased his versatility by presenting various programs on RTÉ and TG4 over the years. His unique broadcasting style, characterized by liveliness and exuberance, earned him numerous awards and accolades.

His passion for identifying and nurturing new musical talent led to the establishment of various musical festivals and events, including “A Cabaret Craiceáilte.” Rónán cherished the opportunity to be center stage, presenting vibrant public events that brought communities together.

Throughout his battle with cancer, Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí displayed immense strength and resilience. He underwent two major surgeries and approximately 40 rounds of chemotherapy while seeking treatment both at home and abroad.

Recognizing his exceptional contributions to the Irish language, both Glór na nGael and Conradh na Gaeilge honored him with special awards in the past year.
