JoAnne A. Epps passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, following a heartbreaking incident during a memorial service held at Temple University. The service was organized to honor the late Charles L. Blockson, a prominent curator known for his collection of African-American artifacts.
During the memorial event, tragedy struck as Epps, who was scheduled to speak, suffered a sudden health episode. Witnesses reported that she slumped in her chair shortly after the service commenced. Swift action was taken to assist her, and she was carried out by a uniformed officer after it was announced that medical assistance was needed.
Epps was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she was pronounced deceased around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. She was 72 years old.

Officials have been careful not to speculate on Epps’ health before the incident. Ken Kaiser, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Temple University, emphasized the shock and sorrow felt by the entire community.
“We are not aware that President Epps had any health issues,” Kaiser stated during a news conference. He shared a personal connection with Epps that spanned three decades, highlighting her vibrant personality, compassion, and ability to rally people together for any task.
Gregory Mandel, Temple University Provost, struggled to find words to describe the profound impact of JoAnne A. Epps. He spoke of her with deep affection, describing her as a friend who touched the lives of all who knew her.
“We are all in deep grief and at a loss for words. To know JoAnne is to be her friend,” Mandel said at the news conference.
In the wake of this sudden tragedy, Temple University’s Board of Trustees is convening to establish a plan for navigating the transition. Epps had taken on the role of acting president in April following the resignation of Jason Wingard, the university’s first Black president, who stepped down in March.
As the Temple University community grapples with the loss of a beloved leader and educator, JoAnne A. Epps’ legacy of dedication, compassion, and commitment to education will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of students and colleagues.
