Brereton C. Jones, a member of the Democratic Party, served as the 58th Governor of Kentucky from 1991 to 1995. His tenure was marked by a commitment to healthcare reform and a determined effort to address issues within the state’s campaigns and elections system.

When Jones initially entered the realm of politics, he carried with him the image of a philanthropic horse breeder with a strong desire for reform. He promised to cleanse the state government and then return to private life at Airdrie Stud, his horse farm in Woodford County.

In many ways, Jones fulfilled that promise during his time in office. Coincidentally, the BOPTROT scandal, a major political scandal that led to the conviction of more than a dozen sitting or former legislators on federal corruption charges, unfolded during the early months of his governorship. Jones earned both praise and criticism for his stance on the scandal, as he referred to it as a necessary house cleaning of Kentucky’s political system.

Brereton C. Jones leaves behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant who tackled pressing issues facing the Commonwealth of Kentucky during his governorship. His commitment to reform and his contributions to the state will be remembered and honored by the people of Kentucky.
