Maqala was chosen to play for the Fijian team in the Oceania Sevens Championship in 2021, which functioned as a pregame event for the 2020 Summer Olympics. He was subsequently picked to the Fijian team in July 2021 in preparation for the Olympic rugby sevens competition.
