Izaia Perese was pencilled in to make his return to the Wallabies squad on Sunday.

Five years after being taken on the Wallabies’ end of season Spring Tour as a development player under Michael Cheika, the exciting young back was on the cusp of making his debut.
He was to be selected in Dave Rennie’s 38-man squad for the three-match Test series, named on Sunday afternoon.
But his hopes of pulling on the gold jersey for the first time appear all but dashed after being forced off with what appeared to be a wrist injury, but was in fact a dislocated shoulder.

Perese attempted a tackle on Chiefs centre Alex Nankivell, but moments later was nursing his arm and scurrying into the Brookvale Oval sheds.
Only a week earlier Rennie had showered the 24-year-old in praise.
“He’s been excellent,” Rennie said of Perese.
“Prior to that camp, he had about a 20 minute cameo where he got red carded and then he had one game prior to us naming it, so we were never going to bring him into that camp.
“We wanted him to earn the right and play well, and he’s done that. He’s been really strong. We’re excited by that.
“Whether he’s a 12 or whether he’s 13 may depend on how we use Matt To’omua and how we use Hunter Paisami.”
If, as expected, Perese is forced out of the squad, his absence could see former Force midfield duo Kyle Godwin and Tevita Kuridrani come into the mix, with the Wallabies duo, who were looked past by Rennie in 2020, likely competing with Irae Simone for a spot in the midfield.

Perese, who has been one of the few shining lights at the Waratahs in his first year at the club, left the Reds at the end of 2018 and joined the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL.
But his rugby league never got off the ground and after a drug related incident got his career back on track overseas.
Perese was handed a lifeline by the Waratahs in 2021 and had been one of the most damaging backs in Australian rugby.
