McFadden was a linebacker for the Indiana Hoosiers. He appeared in 12 games as a freshman, recording 20 tackles and a forced fumble. As a sophomore, he played more and made 61 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble.
McFadden was voted the Indiana University’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior, he led the team with 58 tackles, six sacks, and two interceptions.
McFadden was named the Anthony Thompson Most Valuable Player in Indiana. He had 77 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery as a senior.
