Smith, one of the top recruits in the 2021 class, finished his senior season with more over 40 tackles and nine sacks. Smith would then be selected for the All-American Bowl roster.

Smith, who was considered to be the best recruit in Louisiana, chose Louisiana State University over offers from Miami, Georgia, and Alabama in order to play collegiate football locally. Smith was the first player in LSU history to wear the number zero. Smith recorded 19 tackles, four sacks, and five tackles for loss during his first season.
