The long-awaited return of LSU defensive tackle Maason Smith from a serious knee injury last season will be postponed by one game due to a suspension, a person with knowledge of the situation said on Thursday. Smith will miss the No. 5 Tigers’ Sept. 3 opening against No. 8 Florida State.

On condition of anonymity because Smith’s punishment, which was first reported by The (Baton Rouge) Advocate, has not yet been made public by the NCAA or LSU, the person said that the NCAA suspended Smith in connection with his involvement in an autograph signing just before a rule change in July 2021 allowed college players to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Smith was selected as a preseason All-Southeastern Conference player.
