Fernando Botero, a Colombian artist famous for his paintings and sculptures of exaggerated human and animal figures, was born in Medelln, Colombia, on April 19, 1932, and died in Monaco on September 15, 2023.

Although Botero spent some time at a matadors’ school as a young man, his primary passion was for the arts. He started painting when he was still a youngster, and was greatly influenced by the pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial art that was all around him, as well as by the political murals of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera.

His own paintings were initially displayed in 1948, and he had his first one-man show in Bogota two years later. He made a living by copying paintings from the Prado Museum, particularly those of his idols at the time, and selling them to tourists in Madrid in the early 1950s while he was studying painting.
