He  is best known for his lengthy and illustrious career as a WWE play-by-play announcer. He is affectionately known as JR or Good Ol’ JR. Ross has been dubbed “Wrestling’s Greatest Commentator of All Time.”

Ross became the lead play-by-play commentator for Mid-South Wrestling in the early 1980s after years of working numerous jobs in the professional wrestling industry.

He later worked as a commentator for the National Wrestling Alliance and World Championship Wrestling before joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), where he made his debut at WrestleMania IX in 1993.

During his time with WWE, Ross was largely considered as the company’s voice, notably during the late 1990s and early 2000s’ Attitude Era.

He has been inducted into the WWE, NWA, and Wrestling Observer Newsletter halls of fame, as well as the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame on two occasions.
