Toowoomba-based In the first State of Origin game at Suncorp Stadium, where the Maroons defeated NSW 20-10, McDonald, a former superb center who had played 13 Tests for Australia, coached Queensland. McDonald, 79, passed away late on Wednesday afternoon.

He was the head coach of the Maroons’ inaugural State of Origin team in 1980, as well as Queensland in the late 1970s. By the end of the decade, he had attained the post of President of the Queensland Rugby League (QRL), and in 1998, he had also been named Chairman of the Board of Directors for both the QRL and the Australian Rugby League. He had also joined the National Rugby League Executive Committee.
