One of the top criminal defense attorneys in the country, Robert S. Bennett, passed away on Sunday at his home in Washington. He was well-known for his defence of celebrities and the rich and famous who were embroiled in scandals. He was 84.

Mr. Bennett was forced to shuttle between courtrooms at the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., in September 1992, sometimes on the same day, to defend two former secretary of defense at once: Republican Caspar W. Weinberger and Democrat Clark M. Clifford.

In the instance of President Clinton, whose liaison with Monica Lewinsky was revealed in the Paula Jones lawsuit, Mr. Bennett was quick to tell reporters that the Jones filing was “tabloid trash with a legal caption.”
