British chef Nico Ladenis passed away from an unknown cause on September 10, 2023. He was aged 89.

About Nico Ladenis

Nico Ladenis was a self-taught chef who taught several other celebrity chefs and became known for his mantra “the customer is not always right”.

Ladenis was the first to achieve three Michelin Stars, following the success of his restaurant chain, “Chez Nico”, one of the highest rated restaurant in the UK, “with a ten out of ten in the Good Food Guide and 5 AA Rosettes.”

Ladenis was a graduate of Economics at Hull, and an author of two semi-autobiographical books titled “My Gastronomy” and “Nico.”

Ladenis, during his lifetime, strived to live up to his personal philosophies – Precision, Restraint, Simplicity and Consistency.

In 1999, he returned his three Michelin stars following his diagnosis of prostate cancer. The following year, Ladenis relocated to France, but returned to England again in 2011.

Till date, his family still run his businesses.

Ladenis was awarded Best Chef Award in 1988, at the Catey Awards. In 2015, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award, also at the Catey Awards.
