After completing Hartpury College, Varney joined the Gloucester Academy and continued his rugby career there before moving on to Crymych RFC in Wales. He temporarily quit rugby to concentrate on golf after being rejected from the Scarlets’ pathway system, but he soon came back and established himself.

During his stay at Hartpury College, he shown his talent, which helped him secure a spot in the Gloucester RFC Academy. Varney has been included in the Italian team for the Rugby World Cup in 2023.
