Prior to the 2023–24 season, scrum-half Stephen Varney of the Italian national team has renewed his contract with Gloucester Rugby. Varney, who is 21 years old, has been a consistent member of the Cherry & Whites squad ever since George Skivington moved him into the senior team in 2020 as a result of an outstanding run of play.

His mother is Italian, hence he was eligible to play for Italy at the international level in 2020. He has since earned 19 caps for the Azzurri. In Cherry & White, the 21-year-old has made 37 appearances, 16 of which have been this season.

George Skivington, head coach of Gloucester Rugby, is happy that Varney will stay at Kingsholm. Varney has been selected for the Italian team ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023.
