The retail sector in South Africa was greatly impacted by Raymond Ackerman. He not only established a prosperous company but also changed the way people buy for groceries. He was Pick ‘n Pay’s chairman, and he was instrumental in turning the business into a household name.

Beyond the aisles of his stores, Ackerman was a fervent supporter of consumer rights. He thought that everyone ought to have access to affordable items.

Among their many philanthropic endeavors, Raymond, his wife Wendy, and their four children, Suzanne, Kathryn, Jonathan, and Gareth, established a trust to support educational initiatives as well as initiatives aimed at uplifting the community and encouraging entrepreneurship.

Ackerman acknowledged that SA faced “enormous difficulties” but maintained that it was still a “sound country” in a paper he wrote in 2021, the year he turned 90.
