A South African businessman named Raymond Ackerman, who lived from 10 March 1931 to 6 September 2023, bought the Pick ‘n Pay grocery chain from its founder. In the 1960s, he acquired four stores from Jack Goldin. Up to his resignation in 2010, Raymond Ackerman served as chairman.

In 1986, Rhodes University granted him an honorary doctorate in law. In 2001, the University of Cape Town bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in business. In 2004, he was ranked 79th out of the top 100 South Africans.

He was the only South African to be recognized among the top 100 business leaders in the world by the Financial Times in November 2004. He frequently has a ranking with Anton Rupert and Harry Oppenheimer in South Africa.
