Newell attended Rangiora High School and is a native of Rangiora, which is a suburb of Christchurch. On February 28, 2021, he made his Crusaders debut.

In just his first year out of school in 2019, Newell—a strong scrummager—was promoted to the New Zealand Under 20 team and swiftly won over Crusaders coach Scott Robertson.

Newell made his Test debut for the All Blacks in the 35-23 victory in Johannesburg on August 14, 2022, following a standout Super Rugby Pacific season with the Crusaders in 2022.
